At the law offices of James R. Hutchens, P.A., in Sarasota, we have deep respect for victims of this insidious disorder, and decades of experience in helping people suffering from RSD to obtain compensation for their medical treatment, extreme pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life, ability to work or diminution of wage-earning capacity.
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy was first diagnosed during the U.S. Civil War. It is a chronic, progressive, neurological disorder that typically starts in an injured arm or leg. It causes pain in the skin, bones, muscles and joints. The regional pain can migrate to uninjured parts of the body, and at advanced stages RSD can lead to depression, anxiety, extreme chronic pain and immobility of the limbs.
RSD can be attributed to trauma caused by car accidents, falls, surgeries, gunshot wounds or other mishaps. Other conditions associated with the onset of reflex sympathetic dystrophy include carpal tunnel syndrome, spinal cord disorder and heart disease.
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy typically affects people between the ages of 40 and 60. It affects both men and women but is more common in women. In up to 20 percent of cases, no direct cause can be determined.
